Repaired.net 4 then reinstalled sql svr 2008 enterprise. Guess what, I still got sql svr error 40 & error 2. It should not be this hard, I am thinking, may be roll back to Windows XP from Windows 7, or switch to MySQL are valid options. I finally figured it out. My issue was caused by a corrupted Visual Studio 2008 during Windows 7 Pro 64 bit install. After I removed VS 2008 and clean up the registry, SQL server 2008 R2 installed successfully.
Prior to SQL install, I have.NET4 installed and since Windows installer 5 came with Windows 7, no need to do that. Important note: Post SQL install, SQL Server 2008 SP1 or SP2 must be applied.
